Storm hits close to home

April 29th, 2011, 8:50 am by

I am writing my column this weekend about my experience at Lambert Airport after last week’s storm. When I returned, my car was not in nearly as bad a shape as many other vehicles that I observed. I felt very fortunate our vehicle survived the storm, right in the middle of it.

I thought the airport workers, management, the airlines, all did an exceptional job getting things ready so quickly. The airport wasn’t closed  for long after the storm hit. It took a remarkable the effort on the part of those involved to get the airport and airlines up and running again so quickly.

I felt fortunate that I still had a car and ability to drive home.  I was also thankful no one was hurt in the tornado.

The tornado does remind person how quickly weather events can change our circumstances.

See my column this weekend about the experience.

Tiemann and crew leave lasting impact in Alton

April 12th, 2011, 1:17 pm by

I was excited to see Brad Tiemann, a Godfrey native and 1989 Alton High graduate, return home with his “The Buried Life” crew for an appearance at Alton High on Monday.

I think Tiemann left quite an impression on Alton High youth and he and his cast were greeted with screams of excitement. Ben Nemltin, Dave Lingwood, Duncan Penn and Jonnie Benn joined him on Monday at Alton High. Barcy Macias, a member of the Alton School Board, asked Tiemann over the holidays if he could do the program. Macias commended the cast for “the power of positive thinking.”

I interviewed and met Tiemann before he started the show and must admit the show is excellent, emotional at times, amusing during others. I am sure those in attendance on Monday will remember Tiemann and the crew the rest of their lives. It is good the Godfrey native didn’t forget his roots and made time for students going through the same school he graduated from in 1989.

Turnout appears low, so voting is important

April 5th, 2011, 2:02 pm by

Voter turnout in the five-county area appears low on this Election Day.

I encourage voters to get out and cast their ballots before the day ends. I am writing this at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, so there is still time to get out and cast a vote.

With low turnout expected for the different races, every vote will matter, so if you haven’t voted, I encourage you to get out and visit the polls before 7 p.m.

Election Day is coming on Tuesday

April 1st, 2011, 2:07 pm by

I am reminding people that Tuesday will be Election Day throughout the region.

We have a lot of interesting races and issues in our communities and I hope people will be out voting. Do you plan to vote? If not, why not?
