I had an interesting conversation with senior citizen the other day about his decision to start a work out program.
He asked me a couple questions about the locker area, and I answered them. He said, “I’m going to start working out. I have had many years of unhealthy living and I’m going to start eating right and exercising. I’m paying a price for those habits now.”
I encouraged him to get started and make it a part of his everyday routine. I told him the only way I work out is to do it in the morning before work before the rest of the day gets crazy.
I actually started my workout routine on Jan. 2, 1979. I had gained about 15 to 20 pounds after entering Eastern Illinois University and decided I had to start running again. I was terrible in the beginning, only being able to finish a couple laps on the track. Within a couple weeks, I was up to a mile and in 1983, ran a 26.2-mile marathon under four hours. I added weightlifting and eventually swimming to my workout routines.
I still exercise, though, I’m not as fit as I was back in my 20s and early 30s. My main goal now is to stay toned and be able to keep up with my two children. It also helps me combat my diabetes. I encourage those considering a New Year’s resolution to be more fit to consider a regular routine at one of our local health clubs. Also, the diet part has to go hand in hand with the exercise.
Have a Happy New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
